Inspired by simple lives led by the tides began as a reference to the tidal nature of access to Tauroa, more commonly known in the surf community as Shipwreck Bay - Where The Huts are situated - and the beautiful simplicity in the lives of the Seaweed Picker community.
Over the years this grew to encompass both a return to nature's rhythms, and living in reverence for the health and wellbeing of water.
As Drop In came to life, this is how wai water came to be our greatest stakeholder.
Another guiding feeling that flows from The Huts to Drop In is “reimagining to provide a balance between that which is essential and that little something extra”.
What are essential pieces for ocean go-ers? As I sit here writing in winter, it’s warmth. It’s layers of breathable natural fibres. It’s keeping my head, hands and feet cosy. So I can trick myself into thinking I’ll be that cosy in the water. And once I get there, a warm wetsuit, extra volume in my surfboard and a sturdy leg-rope in winter swells.
If I send my mind to summer, it’s hats, surf wear and light clothes for sun cover, taking care of my skin.
In both it’s hydration. It’s rest. It’s being able to stretch that time at the beach as far as possible. And that if we get stuck with the high tide, we have everything we need.
